On June 21, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha underscored the significance of integrating yoga into daily life while speaking at the state-level celebration of the 11th International Yoga Day held at the International Fair Ground in Hapania, Agartala. He stressed that yoga plays a key role not only in improving physical health but also in nurturing mental well-being and promoting self-awareness.

Dr. Saha remarked that yoga aids individuals in understanding themselves, a concept known as self-realisation, which he described as one of the most vital aspects of life. He pointed out that yoga serves as a powerful tool to attain this and helps people lead a stress-free, healthy life. Highlighting the positive response from the public, he noted that this year’s celebration, much like the previous year’s, was marked by great enthusiasm throughout the state of Tripura.

The chief minister also spoke about the origins of International Yoga Day, tracing it back to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the United Nations in September 2014. In that speech, Modi proposed designating June 21 as International Yoga Day—a suggestion that received overwhelming support from 177 countries. Since then, starting in 2015, Yoga Day has been celebrated annually across the world.

He emphasized that yoga is deeply rooted in Indian culture, with ancient saints having practiced it for centuries. Dr. Saha expressed satisfaction that yoga is now gaining global recognition for its numerous benefits. He mentioned that over 1.33 lakh yoga centres exist today in countries like the United States and China, a testament to its growing popularity and its evolution into a worldwide wellness movement.

However, the chief minister voiced concern over modern challenges—particularly the impact of the digital age on the youth. He noted that increasing dependence on technology has led younger generations to drift away from traditional wellness practices like yoga. In this context, he made a fervent appeal to the youth to reconnect with yoga and make it a part of their daily routine. He stressed that regular yoga practice can help individuals stay both physically fit and mentally balanced in an increasingly fast-paced, internet-driven world.

As the state’s Health Minister, Dr. Saha also addressed a major public health concern— the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases in Tripura. He called for increased awareness, preventive measures, and timely medical intervention. Highlighting the importance of immunity and overall wellness, he stated that yoga can play a crucial role in this battle. According to him, yoga not only improves memory but also strengthens the immune system and enhances overall health, making it a valuable complementary practice in the fight against such diseases.

The event saw the active participation of government officials, yoga practitioners, students, healthcare professionals, and citizens, all coming together to celebrate and promote yoga as a way of life. Through his speech, CM Saha reiterated the importance of embracing yoga in modern society—for individual growth, community health, and global harmony.
