Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has strongly objected to a recent travel advisory issued by the United States that labeled Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India as "unsafe" due to terrorism and violence. The advisory, classified under Level-2, urged US citizens to reconsider travel to these regions, although it exempted capital cities from the restrictions.

On Tuesday, CM Sangma announced his intention to personally take up the matter with the US Ambassador to India. He criticized the advisory as "incorrect" and "unfair," stating that it misrepresents the actual situation in Meghalaya. The Chief Minister emphasized that the state is safe and has long maintained peace and stability. He said that he would seek clarification from the US authorities and request a revision of the advisory. Sangma also stated that he would raise the issue through proper diplomatic channels, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to Sangma, the portrayal of Meghalaya as unsafe in an official document by a foreign government could have significant negative implications for the state's image, tourism, and economic activities. He expressed frustration that such perceptions persist despite Meghalaya’s proven track record of being a peaceful destination. “It is very sad that even today, the media asks questions about the safety of Meghalaya. Enough is enough,” said Sangma, urging the press to play a more responsible and constructive role in shaping public opinion.

The Chief Minister further appealed to the media to counter misinformation and support the state by highlighting its achievements and progress. He stated that young people, entrepreneurs, and tourists should not be discouraged by outdated or inaccurate portrayals of the region.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also criticized the US advisory, calling it unfortunate. He questioned the credibility and sources of the data used to classify Meghalaya as unsafe. Tynsong emphasized that the state government had not been contacted or consulted before the issuance of such a sensitive advisory, and he questioned how such assessments are made without accurate ground reports.

Both leaders asserted that Meghalaya continues to be a welcoming and secure destination for tourists, businesspeople, and international visitors. They expressed confidence that dialogue with US authorities and appropriate coordination with India’s central ministries would lead to the re-evaluation and withdrawal of the misleading advisory.

In conclusion, CM Sangma’s strong response and plans to engage with the US Ambassador reflect the seriousness with which the Meghalaya government views the advisory. The state leadership is committed to protecting Meghalaya’s reputation and ensuring that international narratives accurately reflect the ground reality.
