The fisheries sector in Sikkim has shown promising growth, with more than 2,000 families now actively engaged in fish farming, according to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. Speaking on the occasion of National Fish Farmers’ Day, he emphasized the critical role the sector plays in generating self-employment opportunities, improving food security, and strengthening the rural economy of the state.

In his message, Tamang acknowledged the hard work and commitment of fish farmers who have contributed to the sector’s development. He attributed the sector’s progress to proactive government policies aimed at promoting sustainable aquaculture. Among the notable initiatives are the encouragement and implementation of advanced fish farming methods such as Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and biofloc technology, which ensure high productivity while conserving water and maintaining environmental standards.

The Chief Minister pointed out that these modern aquaculture practices are increasingly being adopted by the younger population in Sikkim, signaling a promising and innovative future for the fisheries industry. He mentioned that this shift towards modern techniques reflects a growing awareness among youth about the benefits of fish farming as a sustainable livelihood and business opportunity.

Tamang also highlighted the government’s plan to introduce Organic Fish Farming in the state. This move is in line with Sikkim’s existing organic policy, which has already positioned the state as a leader in organic agriculture in India. The integration of organic practices into aquaculture is expected to open new markets, especially for consumers who are environmentally conscious and prefer chemical-free food products. This step is seen as an important strategy for enhancing the value and appeal of Sikkim’s fish products in both national and international markets.

According to the Chief Minister, continuous support from the state government has not only increased fish production but has also empowered farmers to become agents of innovation and resilience. He stressed that fish farming has become a practical, sustainable, and profitable livelihood option for a significant portion of the state’s population.

In his message, Tamang also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of fish farmers in ensuring food security, contributing to rural development, and promoting environmentally responsible growth. He praised their role in supporting Sikkim’s economy and maintaining ecological balance through sustainable farming practices.

Furthermore, he extended his warm greetings and appreciation to all fish farmers on the occasion of National Fish Farmers’ Day, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and importance in achieving the state’s developmental goals.

In conclusion, the Sikkim government’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and support for local communities has been instrumental in the rise of fish farming in the region. The combination of modern technology, youth involvement, and organic integration presents a holistic approach that not only benefits farmers but also aligns with the state’s long-term vision of ecological harmony and economic resilience.
