Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on September 8, coinciding with the birth anniversary of legendary singer ‘Sudhakantha’ Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. During his visit, he will lay the foundation for several major infrastructure projects worth a total of ₹8,000 crore. These include the construction of the Darrang Medical College, a bridge over the Brahmaputra River connecting Kuruwa in Darrang with Narengi in Guwahati, and the ambitious Guwahati Ring Road project.

The ceremonial foundation stone laying is likely to take place at a public meeting to be held at the Government Sericulture Farm at Kamarpara near Mangaldai. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement during an unplanned visit to the proposed venue. He was joined by a group of prominent political figures and officials, including MP and BJP State President Dilip Saikia, MLAs Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi, Basanta Das, and Diganta Kalita, former MLA Gurujyoti Das, as well as senior officials from the State Public Works Department (PWD) and the Darrang district administration.

The Darrang Medical College, one of the flagship projects, is to be built at an estimated cost of ₹572 crore on over 146 bighas of land. The college is expected to include 430 beds and is part of the government’s plan to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in the region.

During his interaction with reporters, the Chief Minister confirmed that based on a PWD feasibility report, the Kamarpara site is almost finalized for the Prime Minister’s event. He outlined the PM’s itinerary, stating that Modi will begin the day with a visit to Numaligarh, then proceed to Mangaldai for the public event, and finally head to Guwahati to attend Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary function.

When asked about the fate of the mature plants at the Government Sericulture Farm, which will be affected by the medical college construction, Sarma said a relocation plan is in place. A new site for transplanting the plants has been identified by local MLA Basanta Das. He requested the media not to sensationalize the issue, highlighting the greater importance of the proposed medical college, nursing college, and GNM training school, all of which are critical to the region’s long-term development.

The Chief Minister also addressed concerns regarding the slow progress in the construction of the Assam Skill University at Gerimari, Mangaldai. Expressing dissatisfaction, he said that despite regular reviews, the project has fallen behind schedule. Originally set for completion by November, the construction agency has now requested an extension. Sarma assured that he will revisit the site soon to personally assess the progress.

This major visit by PM Modi is expected to be a significant boost for Assam’s infrastructure and healthcare landscape, reflecting both state and central governments’ commitment to development and public welfare.
