Tesla has officially marked its entry into the Indian market by launching its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The showroom is set to open on Tuesday and will serve as a key display and customer experience centre for Elon Musk’s electric vehicle (EV) company. This launch signifies Tesla’s first formal step into India, one of the fastest-growing EV markets globally.
The Mumbai showroom will allow customers to closely inspect Tesla vehicles and learn about the company’s cutting-edge EV technology. Tesla’s initial offering in India will be the Model Y SUV, which will be available in two variants. The rear-wheel drive version is priced at ₹60 lakh (approximately $69,765), while the long-range rear-wheel drive variant is priced higher at ₹68 lakh. These prices are significantly more than the Model Y’s base price in international markets such as the U.S., China, and Germany, where it starts at $44,990, 263,500 yuan, and 45,970 euros respectively.
The inflated Indian pricing is attributed to import duties, as the vehicles will be imported as completely built units (CBUs) from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. This facility currently serves as Tesla’s manufacturing hub for several international markets. Tesla has imported six Model Y SUVs to India, which will be showcased and used for test drives at the Mumbai showroom.
In addition to the vehicles, Tesla has brought in Supercharger equipment and related accessories valued at approximately $1 million. These components are mainly sourced from China and the United States. The Superchargers are expected to be installed in and around Mumbai to support early Tesla adopters and provide a functional charging infrastructure.
Tesla is also setting up a service centre in Kurla West, Mumbai, to manage vehicle maintenance and provide after-sales support. This is a crucial move for building customer trust and ensuring long-term sustainability in the Indian market.
The Mumbai outlet is anticipated to be the first of several showrooms across India, contingent upon the market’s reception. Tesla’s expansion strategy seems poised to scale depending on customer interest, government policy, and infrastructure development.
Beyond the showroom, Tesla already maintains a registered office in Bengaluru and an engineering hub in Pune, indicating its broader commitment to operations and product development within the country.
To generate excitement ahead of the launch, Tesla posted a teaser from its India-specific X (formerly Twitter) handle. The teaser, shared on Friday, read “Coming soon” and featured a graphic indicating Tesla’s official India debut in July 2025.
