Indonesian police have arrested 12 individuals after uncovering a baby trafficking syndicate that sent more than a dozen infants to Singapore for adoption. The investigation began when a parent reported an alleged baby kidnapping. The police in West Java pursued the lead, which ultimately led them to a suspect who confessed to being involved in trading 24 babies. Surawan, the Director of General Criminal Investigation with the West Java Police, revealed that most of the babies were taken from their biological parents in West Java.

According to Surawan, the infants were first transported to Pontianak, a city on the island of Borneo, and later sent to Singapore. Based on documentation reviewed by the authorities, at least 14 babies were sent to Singapore. These children were all under the age of one, with some as young as three to six months old.

The authorities successfully rescued six babies—five in Pontianak and one in Tangerang, a city near Jakarta. They also arrested 12 suspects in various locations, including Jakarta, Pontianak, and Bandung. Surawan confirmed that this was a well-organized baby trafficking syndicate in which each member played a specific role. Some members were responsible for locating and acquiring babies, while others were in charge of caring for them, providing shelter, or producing false documentation, including family cards and passports.

According to police, the babies were being sold for adoption in Singapore for amounts ranging between 11 million and 16 million Indonesian Rupiah (approximately $676 to $983 USD). Based on suspect testimony, the syndicate had been operational since 2023. The group specifically targeted mothers who were unwilling or unable to care for their babies and offered them money in exchange for giving up their children.

Interestingly, the parent who initially reported the kidnapping to the authorities had previously reached an agreement with the traffickers before the child was born. However, the report was made when the promised payment was not fulfilled by the syndicate.

This revelation has prompted Indonesian authorities to plan collaboration with Interpol to identify and locate the trafficked infants who may now be in Singapore. Surawan confirmed that coordination with international agencies is underway to further trace the missing children and bring those responsible to justice.

Human trafficking, including the illegal sale of babies, remains a major domestic and international concern for Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy. The country, composed of over 17,000 islands, faces significant challenges in monitoring and preventing such crimes due to its geographical spread and complex administrative structures.

This case is one of several recent high-profile incidents involving human trafficking in Indonesia. In 2022, one of the worst cases in recent memory was reported in North Sumatra, where at least 57 people were found held in cages on a palm oil plantation, highlighting the persistent and dangerous presence of trafficking networks within the country.

The recent arrests and rescues mark an important step in Indonesia’s ongoing fight against human trafficking, with authorities pledging continued vigilance and stronger international cooperation to dismantle these criminal syndicates and protect vulnerable individuals, especially infants and children.
