North Lakhimpur Municipality Wins Best Swachh Survekshan 2025 Award

The North Lakhimpur Municipality Board (NLMB) of Assam has achieved a significant milestone by winning the prestigious Best Swachh Survekshan 2025 award in the category of cities with a population of up to one lakh. This award, presented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, recognizes NLMB as one of the top-performing urban local bodies in India in the field of cleanliness, sanitation, and waste management.

The award ceremony was held on Thursday in New Delhi, where Union Urban Development and Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar presented the award to Krishna Dhar Sen, the Chairperson of NLMB. The event was attended by key municipal representatives including Tapash Jyoti Baruah, Executive Officer of NLMB, and Prasanta Baruah, Ward Commissioner.

This recognition marks a proud moment for the people of North Lakhimpur and the entire state of Assam. With this honour, NLMB has set a benchmark in terms of urban sanitation and solid waste management practices. It has emerged as Assam’s top-ranked municipality in the cleanliness drive initiated under the national Swachh Bharat Mission.

The Swachh Survekshan 2025 rankings were announced by the Ministry as part of a nationwide assessment that evaluated urban local bodies (ULBs) across multiple parameters. The key criteria included:

  • Door-to-door waste collection

  • Segregation of waste at source

  • Efficiency of waste processing

  • Adherence to cleanliness certification standards

Cities were judged not just on infrastructure, but also on innovation, impact, sustainability, and public participation in cleanliness efforts.

North Lakhimpur Municipality stood out for its systematic and dedicated approach toward sanitation, ensuring maximum citizen participation and transparency in waste management. The consistent implementation of awareness programs, adoption of environment-friendly practices, and efficient administrative coordination played a crucial role in securing the top position.

The award signifies not only recognition but also reflects the growing importance of decentralized, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to urban sanitation in small and medium-sized towns. By winning this award, NLMB has become a model for other municipalities in the state and across India that aspire to improve their cleanliness and hygiene standards.

The leadership and commitment of the municipal team, the cooperation of the public, and the support of state authorities were critical in achieving this success. It demonstrates how collaborative efforts between government bodies and local communities can result in substantial improvements in civic amenities and urban health.

Going forward, NLMB is expected to continue its mission with even greater dedication, aiming to sustain and improve its performance in future cleanliness surveys. This win is also expected to encourage other municipalities in Assam to adopt best practices in solid waste management and sanitation.

In conclusion, the Best Swachh Survekshan 2025 award serves as a moment of pride and motivation for North Lakhimpur and highlights the importance of grassroots efforts in achieving the larger goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
